The maces were often formed in shapes related to nature such as stems, flowers, stars, and cactii. The Moche artistry shows that they were great farmers cultivating many crops in the the river valleys. They were able to transform the land into a verdant oasis with the development of an extensive irrigation network. This organically shaped ridged bead symbolises water, the provider of life and good harvests.

Study of the murals and ceramic art shows that women played a prominent role in Moche culture, both in religion and ceremony. Most recent discoveries of Moche archeology show that women indeed were not just the daughter, mother, or wife of the noble warriors but also had high status and many roles in Moche society. In fact it was female Si, the moon goddess, who was considered to be the supreme deity in Moche culture, visible both night and day, more powerful than the sun, controlling the seasons and the storms, looking over her people, their harvests, their battles and their daily life.

  STORY: The Moche warriors were frequently depicted in Moche art and regarded as one of the most important and noble figures in Moche society. The combat illustrated in artistic narratives appears to be ceremonial rather than militaristic. The stories shown were about the expression of individual valour, in which the warriors engaged in one-on-one combat usually fighting in inter-valley rivalries in disputes over agricultural land. They wore head- dresses, a protective back flap, and carried clubs which were employed during warfare and ceremonies.

The Warrior Priest is often depicted in ceramic decoration with rays emanating from his head and shoulders. In addition to his conical helmet, he wore a crescent-shaped headdress and large circular ear ornaments. The Moche priests were the curators of ceremonies in both life, death and seasonal thanksgiving.  The warrior priest was respected for their status, guidance, spirituality and connection to the celestial world. Some scholars believe that the central decoration on their headdress sometimes a double circle, or an owls face depicted the third eye, symbolising intuition.

  STORY: The unusual 'Night Owl' hand cast silver bead is based on a traditional Moche owl figure. Owl symbols are often seen in Moche artistry in both metallurgy and ceramic decoration. The owl was worshipped as a God by the Moche and was believed to be a symbol of the night, quietly and wisely watching over their people both in battles and in daily life. The ears or horns in the owl icons can be likened to the the South American great horned owl (Bubo virginianus nacurutu) known today.
